How To Make A Custom Cabinet Drawer?
A custom cabinet drawer is made by measuring the cabinet opening, selecting the slide system, calculating the drawer-box dimensions, cutting and joining the panels, installing the bottom, attaching the front, and adjusting the complete assembly.
The drawer-slide specification must be chosen before the box is built. Different slides require different side clearances, bottom positions, and mounting holes.

Measure the Cabinet Opening Correctly
Measure the internal width at the front, middle, and back.
Measure the opening height on both sides and record the usable depth from the front frame to the rear obstruction.
Do not assume an older cabinet is square.
Use the smallest practical measurement when calculating the drawer so it does not bind in a narrower section.
Also inspect:

Door hinges
Plumbing
Internal shelf supports
Existing screw holes
Back-panel position
Cabinet-side thickness
A drawer near a sink may need reduced depth because of pipes and waste fittings.
Choose the Drawer Slide First
Side-Mount Slides
Side-mount slides are fixed to the outer sides of the drawer box. They usually require a defined clearance between the box and cabinet.
They are easy to inspect and replace but remain visible when the drawer opens.
Undermount Slides
Undermount slides are hidden below the drawer. They provide a clean appearance and often include soft-close functions.
They require accurate box dimensions, bottom preparation, rear hooks, and locking devices.
Center-Mount Slides
A center slide uses one runner beneath the drawer. It can work for smaller or traditional drawers but normally carries less load than a pair of heavy-duty runners.
Wooden Runners
Traditional drawers may slide on wooden rails. They are simple but sensitive to humidity, friction, and dimensional change.
Select the system according to drawer width, load, appearance, and cost.
Calculate the Drawer Dimensions
The slide manufacturer’s instructions determine the side clearance and box length.
The drawer-box width is normally:
Cabinet opening width minus required slide clearance
The height should allow space above and below the box so it does not rub against the cabinet or nearby drawer.
The depth should match the slide length without contacting the rear panel.
Do not simply copy the old drawer when changing to a different slide system. The new hardware may require different dimensions.
Select the Joint Structure
Custom drawer boxes can use several joining methods.
Dovetail joints
Provide a traditional appearance and strong mechanical engagement. They require suiTable machinery and stable solid wood or plywood.
Dowel joints
Create clean production assembly when drilling remains accurate.
Confirmat screws
Are practical for engineered panels and flat-pack structures when the board density and pilot holes are suitable.
Rabbet and groove joints
Provide more bonding area than a simple butt joint.
Cam connectors
Allow disassembly but take more internal space.
The joint should match the material and production quantity.
A strong joint in weak panel edges will not provide reliable long-term performance.
Prepare the Drawer Bottom
The bottom may sit in a groove, attach beneath the box, or form part of a metal drawer system.
A grooved bottom normally provides cleaner load transfer because it is supported along several edges.
For wide drawers, use a thicker bottom or additional support.
A cutlery drawer and a pot drawer should not automatically use the same bottom thickness.
Before assembly, confirm:
Bottom-panel material
Groove depth
Rear connection
Slide clearance
Expected load
Moisture exposure
The bottom should remain flat and should not rattle inside the groove.
Assemble the Drawer Box
Dry-fit every part before applying adhesive or final fasteners.
Check that the front and back panels sit square to the sides.
Apply adhesive where the joint design requires it, then clamp or secure the box without pulling it out of square.
Measure both diagonals. Equal diagonals indicate that the box is rectangular.
Remove excess adhesive before it cures on a visible surface.
Allow sufficient curing time before mounting the slides or loading the drawer.
Install the Slides
Mark a consistent reference line in the cabinet.
Install both runners at the same height and keep them parallel.
For side-mount slides, use the specified setback from the cabinet front.
For undermount slides, prepare the rear notches, hook holes, and front locking devices according to the hardware template.
Test the empty drawer first.
It should open fully without rubbing, twisting, or releasing unexpectedly.
Then add a controlled load and repeat the test.
Fit the Drawer Front
Drawer fronts can be inset, full overlay, or partial overlay.
Use temporary spacers to maintain even gaps around adjacent doors and drawers.
Fasten the front from inside the drawer box so visible screw heads are avoided.
Check:
Horizontal alignment
Vertical gap
Handle position
Front projection
Clearance from nearby doors
Soft-close operation
Do not use the handle screws as the only connection between the front and box unless the construction is designed for it.

A custom drawer can include:
